Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday launched the Pawan Hans helicopter ferry service between Diu and Daman, two Union Territories adjacent to Gujarat. He also inaugurated a daily flight service between Ahmedabad and Diu. The PM was on one day visit to Daman, union territory close to south Gujarat.

The prime minister reached Surat airport on Saturday morning and from there to Daman. The air connectivity between Ahmedabad and Diu has been launched under the central government’s initiative to push the domestic flight service, UDAN. The prime minister said that the Ahmedabad-Diu flight would be a great push for wild life tourism in Gujarat’s Gir sanctuary.

In Daman, the PM laid the foundation stone for projects such as water treatment plants, electricity sub station, gas pipeline, foot overbridge and municipal market. He presented the Diu and Daman administrator, Prafull Patel, with a certificate for open defecation free status. 

“I have observed Daman and Diu is one of the cleanest Union Territories and that always fascinated me. I hope this status will attract more tourists to Daman and Diu,” the PM said. 

He invited fishermen in the UT to join the Centre’s blue revolution initiatives and purchase advanced technology boats for fishing in deep seas. He also aired his admiration for the UT administration that abolished VAT levied from fisherman community.

On Sunday evening, the PM will “flag off ‘Run for New India Marathon’ in Surat. The Surat BJP unit has organised a 6 km road show with latest technology display models along the route.

Local MLA Harsh Sanghvi said, “This is going to be grander than the grandest ever road show of the PM. We have raised social media walls at different places along the route where the posts of different social media related to marathon will be displayed. We have prepared 12 different pavilions on the themes of PM’s visionary initiatives like Digital India, New India, Swachchh Bharat and other.”
