The state government has signed an MoU with the central government and Bharat Broadband Network Limited (BBNL) for implementation of second phase of Bharatnet project, which aims to cover lakhs of village panchayats across the country with high-speed broadband connectivity.

The MoU was in the wake of Telecom Commission approving the state government’s detailed project report for implementation of Bharatnet Phase II.

Officials said that more than 7,000 gram panchayats in the state would be covered in the second phase by 2019. “A total of 7,295 gram panchayats in Gujarat would be covered in the second phase of Bharatnet project at a cost of Rs1,670 crore, which will be fully funded by the central government,” Dhananjay Dwivedi, secretary, science and technology department, said.

Nearly 37,000 km of Optical Fibre Cable (OFC) would be laid to provide high-speed broadband connectivity to these village panchayats. It will involve laying of fresh fibre OFC from the block to village panchayats to provide end-to-end connectivity.

“As per the MoU we have signed, the work will be completed by March 2019,” Dwivedi said.

Bharatnet is a central government project to provide broadband connectivity to approximately 2,50,000 village panchayats across the country through underground OFC, aerial OFC, radio and satellite.

In the first phase of Bharatnet, 6,800 village panchayats in Gujarat were to be provided broadband connectivity, Dwivedi said. He added that the work has been completed in 3,200 villages, and the remaining will be done by March.
