Heavy rain kills four in state

3 of them from A’bad; toll reaches 6 in 2 days

Heavy rain on Tuesday killed at least four people in the state, three of whom were from Ahmedabad. With this, the total number of rain-related deaths in state has reached six in two days and 16 in last one week. According to the Met department, some parts of the state will continue to witness heavy rain in coming days. 

Kokila Thakor and Ramsang Gautam, residents of Shilaj village, were electrocuted on Tuesday morning when they came in contact with a live wire that had fallen because of the rain. Another person, Pankaj, was injured in the accident and is currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Shilaj. Manish Sangla, 18, a resident of of Pipal village in Sanand block, and another yet unidentified person in Morbi died after being struck by lightning.

Meanwhile, two people drowned in Jamnagar in last two days. 

District collectorate officials told DNA that families of the deceased may get state government compensation up to Rs4 lakh. However, no official announcement has been made in this regard. According to Met department, the heavy rain can be attributed to cyclonic circulation over Kutch and Rajasthan and the depression over south Odisha and north Andhra coast. 

In last 24 hours. Valsad received 277mm, Pardi 269mm, Chikhli 253 mm and Dharampur and Gandevi received 201mm of rainfall.

Forecast

Heavy rains are likely over parts of state in next 24 hours, followed by two days of light to moderate rain. Saturday onwards, the state is again likely to get heavy rain.
