HC grants regular bail to Gulbarg convict

The high court on Tuesday granted regular bail to 2002 Gulbarg riots convict Atul Vaidhya against a personal bond and solvency certificate. The special designated court had in 2016 passed judgment in the case convicting 24 and acquitting 36. Vaidhya, one of the accused, had been awarded seven years’ jail. 

While seeking bail, Vaidhya submitted that only one witness had testified against him and that there was no evidence against him. He added that he had already served one of the seven years in jail and his conduct had been good during this period. 

Vaidhya is the first convict prisoner in the case to get regular bail from the high court. In the said case, the state government has yet not granted permission to the SIT to challenge the special designated court's verdict in HC. The victims and the convicts have challenged the judgment in HC.
