The Right to Education (RTE) Act in the state this year has been a farce. And, amidst the chaos of parents running pillar to post, schools knocking doors of the high court and the government not conducting a second round of admissions, Congress MLA Alpesh Thakor and Patidar leader Hardik Patel plunged into action for the rights of the RTE children.

Both the leaders, along with parents, visited Udgam School for Children in Thaltej and met trustees, urging them to admit the children. The school authorities informed them about the age confusion due to which the issue has been cropped up.

"Vacant seats will be filled with children of rich parents by taking lakhs of donation. Poor children also have dreams to study in hi-fi schools like Udgam but don't they have any right?" Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) convenor Hardik Patel said.

"During elections, the government spent money on banners assuring children their right to study. Whereas today, the school management and the government have joined hands. While on one hand, more than 30,000 seats of RTE children are vacant and, on the other, ministers are taking part in Praveshotsav," said MLA Alpesh Thakor, alleging the state government making false claims during elections to woo voters.

"Udgam School for Children was given a list of 53 students to give admission in Class 1 under RTE Act. The school confirmed admission to 18 students in class 1 who had completed 6 years as on June 1," Manan Choksi, Managing Director, Udgam School for Children said.

Abiding by the law, the school cannot facilitate admission to children who have not completed 6 years. Udgam School, along with Association of Progressive Schools, has filed a petition with the High Court to get clarity. However, Udgam school has offered admissions in senior KG this year and will be in class 1 in next academic year. But parents had earlier refused to take admission in senior KG. After meeting MLA Alpesh Thakor and PAAS convenor Hardik Patel, parents were convinced to take admission in senior KG which Udgam school has already offered 15 days ago."
