The Class 10 results declared by the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB), on Monday, have revealed a worrisome picture. Students from Gujarati medium schools have scored lowest with a pass percentage of 65.16 as against that of English medium students at 90.12% and Hindi medium students at 72.30%.

The overall results also witnessed a marginal dip in pass percentage with only 67.5% students clearing the exam this year. Among districts, Dahod continued to be the one with the lowest pass percentage of 37.35 whereas Surat maintained its top position with 80.06% students passing. Interestingly, like the Class 12 state board results this time, the number of schools with 100% results declined. As against last year, when 451 schools had recorded 100% results, the same figure this year has been only 368. Girls, like always, outshined boys with 72.69% clearing the exam as against 63.73% of boys passing. Successful results this year was nearly 0.74% less compared to 2017. However, the number of students scoring over 90% marks has almost doubled. This year, 6,378 students got A1 grade while the number was 3,750 in 2017.

While the examination for SSC continued until March 23, for science and general streams of HSC, the exams continued to March 28. Approximately 17 to 18 lakh students have appeared for board exams this year, including 10 lakh for SSC, 5.5 lakh for general stream and nearly 1.5 lakh for science stream. State's minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama said, "Literacy among parents and the environment plays a very important role. Students who study in English medium schools are being taught at home as well."
