Gujarat: Woman throws five kids in well, four drown

In a shocking incident, a woman from Bhavnagar allegedly threw her five children into a well, before herself jumping into it in a bid to end her life. Four of her children died, even as the woman and one of the children survived.

Gitaben Bhalia, 40, a resident of Royal village in Bhavnagar's Talaja district, left her house along with her children yesterday evening under the pretext of going to a temple in nearby Panchpipla village.

On reaching the village, Gitaben threw her five children, aged between 1.5 and eight years, into the well, and then herself jumped into it. The villagers informed police about the incident, who rescued the woman and her eldest daughter, while fishing out bodies of the four younger children. The four deceased were aged between 1.5 and seven years.

Gitaben was booked for murder and attempt to murder, and arrested b Alang police.

An official at the police station said that Gitaben appeared to be mentally disturbed and claimed to be seeing ghosts whenever she closed her eyes for the last two years. Gitaben told reporters that she decided to take the lives of her children since there was no one to take care of them if she died.

During interrogation, Gitaben, whose husband Dharamshi is a farm worker, told police that she took the extreme step since she could not take proper care of her children because of poverty. The official said that Gitaben was also tired of her weak eyesight.

Gitaben belongs to the Royal village in Bhavnagar’s Talaja district. She left her house on Monday on the pretext of going to the temple in the nearby Panchpipla village. On reaching the village, Gitaben threw her five children, aged between 1.5 and eight years, into the well, and then jumped into it herself
