Gujarat University has given permission to grant-in-aid colleges to increase 20 seats in M.Com course. This decision came after the National Students Union of India (NSUI) submitted a memorandum to the vice chancellor of the university seeking approval to increase seats in government colleges.

While the university has given its approval to increased seats for postgraduate commerce courses, the same will not be viable for undergraduate courses, as per university officials. The university will, however, consider applications from government colleges that voluntarily wish to increase their seats.

"If any college has a capacity for 60 students in a stream, we cannot force them to increase it to 80. It is not viable. Colleges, after taking into consideration their faculty, seats and infrastructure, can voluntarily come to us and ask for an increase in seats. And we will consider the same," said Himanshu Pandya, Vice-Chancellor, Gujarat University.

"Seats in government colleges are limited due to which students are not able to avail the benefits. Since seats have been filled, students are compelled to take admission in private colleges and pay more fees. That is why we has demanded an increase in seats," said NSUI members.

Syndicate member Digvijay Singh Gohil said: "For commerce colleges, we give permission to have 150 students in one class. Colleges cannot go beyond 150 students as the resources are limited. However, for postgraduate courses, we can still give it a thought as colleges do not have more than two sections and can increase one more section. There are about 50 grant-in-aid colleges affiliated to GU."
