Gujarat rain crosses half-way mark

As against average 831 mm in last 30 years, state has received 427 mm or 51.35% rain so far this year

With rain merry continuing at many places, the season's rainfall in the state has already crossed 50% of the average rainfall of the last 30 years, official data shows. The milestone has been achieved five weeks after monsoon set in. According to rain figures compiled by State Emergency Operation Centre, the state has received an average of 427 mm rainfall as of Saturday morning, which is 51.35% of the average of 831 mm rain the state has received between 1988 and 2017.

South Gujarat region, which receives the highest rainfall among all parts of the state, has received over 67.5% of average rain so far. As against the 30-year average of 1,435 mm, the region has received 969 mm rain so far.

Saurashtra, which was battered by heavy rains earlier this week, has received 398 mm rainfall as of Saturday morning, which is 58.5% of the 30-year average of 679 mm.

East-Central Gujarat region, which also comprises Ahmedabad, has received 38% rainfall so far, while north Gujarat has received 27.5%. Kutch region has received only 46 mm rainfall so far, which is 11% of the average of 417 mm rain recorded between 1988 and 2017.

Gir Somnath records 130% Gir Somnath district in Saurashtra received average of 900 mm in the 30-year-period from 1988 to 2017. However, it has received 1,174 mm rainfall so far, which is 130% of the long period average.

Incidentally, it received almost 600 mm rainfall in just three days in the beginning of this week, with rains literally battering the district. Over 50% in ten districts.

Ten other districts have received more than 50% of the average rainfall so far, a list dominated by districts in south Gujarat and Saurashtra.

Navsari in south Gujarat has received 85% of the average rainfall, followed by Valsad and Junagadh with 80%.

Bharuch (69%), Anand (67%), Amreli (66%), Dangs (65%), Surat (63%), Bhavnagar (57%) and Tapi (54%) are the other districts which have received more than half of
the 30-year-average rainfall, the SEOC data show.

Three districts below 20%

Three districts in the state are still waiting for rain Gods to shower their blessings. Besides Kutch district, which has so far received only 11% of the 30-year-average ra-infall, Gandhinagar and Surendranagar have received very little rainfall.

State Capital Gandhinagar has received 137 mm rain so far, which is 17% of the average rainfall between 1988 and 2017. Similarly, Surendranagar district has received 116 mm, which is 19.9% of the average585 mm.

Ahmedabad had also received less than 20%, but it crossed the mark after widespread rain yesterday.

Ditto the case with Mehsana, which has recorded 20.40% of the average rainfall this season. Patan with 21%, Banaskantha with 24%, and Morbi with a little over 25% are the other districts with the lowest rainfall so far.
