Late on Thursday evening, some mysterious foam started flowing from Karim ni Chali near Sarangpur bridge close to Gomtipur. Later, it was found that the foam was emerging from a bore-well under a three-storey building. The foam was formed owing to a chemical which has been used to soften the land before excavation.

The Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) is digging a tunnel in the walled part of the city which is around 6.35km long, for the first phase of the Ahmedabad metro line under the east-west corridor. Officials of the GMRC informed locals that the foam is not harmful. They cleaned up the area within the night. “The foam which was emerging mysteriously flowed till 1am. It was stopped for nearly two hours and then started flowing again at 3am when they managed to stop it. I have inquired about the liquid and found out that it is eco-friendly. On Friday, there was no such issue. The foam consisted of Bentonite, polymer and a special foam which was flowing as sand and foam. The chemical was injected in the land before excavation,” said Iqbal Shikh local councillor. To avoid any recurrences of last night’s incident, which created panic among residents of Saraspur and Gomtipur area, GMRC Limited will launch a fresh survey in the walled part of the city where the underground metro rail line is passing through.

“Last night’s incident was unexpected. Before underground excavation work for tunnel infrastructure, we have conducted several surveys over the ground and underground. However, to prevent any such incidents in the future, we will launch a fresh survey to find out bore-wells and other underground infrastructure,” said Amit Gupta, chief general manager, GMRC.

According to the official, after last night’s incident, one person approached the GMRC and informed them about one more bore-well in the vicinity.
