In a huge embarrassment for the state government, the exam for recruitment of Police Lok Rakshak Dal (LRD) personnel was cancelled on Sunday after the exam paper got leaked.

As many as 8.76 lakh candidates were slated to appear for the exam for recruitment to 9,173 posts of armed lok rakshak, unarmed lok rakshak, and jail sepoy, at 2,440 examination centres across the state, at 3:00 pm on Sunday. The home department cancelled the exam just before 1:00 pm, when it was found that the exam paper has been leaked.

"I received information that the exam paper has been leaked by some anti-social elements. Someone sent me answers to the questions that were a part of the exam. It is clear that the paper has been leaked, and as a result, today's exam is being cancelled. The police have started investigation to identify the people behind the leak," Vikas Sahay, chairman of the Lok Rakshak Recruitment Board, said.

Immediately after the announcement, DGP Shivanand Jha directed police chiefs to undertake patrolling to prevent any untoward incident in view of cancellation of the exam.

However, commotion was witnessed at several places, as candidates, the ones who had travelled long distances to appear for the examination, were left high and dry. Clashes were reported between candidates and the police outside an exam centre in Gandhinagar. There were also protests in Palanpur, while a group of people was detained in Paldi.

"I apologise to candidates who were to appear for the exam, and regret the inconvenience caused to them," ADGP Sahay said, adding they would try to conduct the exam "in a month or so."

The State government said in a statement that Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has directed the home department to conduct an immediate probe in the case, and to take strict action against those involved in it. The government also announced that it would pay the ST bus fare to candidates for travelling to the exam centre, whenever the exams are held.

DGP Shivanand Jha assured that the accused would be caught soon.
