The state government has decided to extend the deadline for installation of High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) in vehicles by three months.

Top government officials have said that the deadline for installing HSRP in all vehicles has been extended to July 31, and a formal notification regarding the same would be issued in a day or two. They said that the decision has been taken in public interest in view of the large number of vehicles without mandatory registration plates.

This is the fifth time the deadline has been extended. The original deadline was January 5, which was extended to February 15, and again to March 31, followed by April 30.

HSRPs are required to be installed in all vehicles, old or new, in view of a Supreme Court order passed in 2013.

RM Jadav, Commissioner of Transport, said that HSRPs have been installed in more than 1.4 crore vehicles out of the total 2.40 crore, in the state so far. Majority of the remaining 1 crore vehicles were registered before November 2012.

"We are now installing over 12 lakh HSRPs in vehicles every month. Going ahead, we are confident of further increasing this number to fully comply with the Supreme Court order," Jadav said.

He added that besides all the Regional Transport Offices, more than 700 automobile dealers have been accorded the status of deemed RTOs for installing HSRPs.

"We are also looking to set up kiosks for installing these, too," he said.

In Ahmedabad, an estimated 27 lakh vehicles are yet to be fitted with high security registration plates, RTO officials said. The total number of such vehicles was 28.7 lakh. HSRPs have been fitted to 1.7 lakh vehicles.
