Across the world, researchers are looking for ways to study availability and sustainability of naturally obtained colour. A group of researchers from the Gujarat Institute of Desert Ecology (GUIDE) had found biocolour-producing bacterial strain from the arid Banni reigon of Kutch eight years ago.

The dye may find application in the dye-making industry at large. The scientists successfully obtained colour from bacteria – at the laboratory level, however, they are looking for funds to do large scale research. “We have succeed at the laboratory level. We are striving to focus on the same if sufficient fund support is available,” said Vijay Kumar director of GUIDE.

Pigment-production employing halophilic bacteria culture has been found in the saline soil of Banni, according to the researchers at GUIDE. For the primary investigation, scientists isolated bacteria from the arid environment and investigated their pigment producing potential under the influence of various nutritional sources which revealed an extreme pigment producing capacity by the bacterial strain. When the pigment was used for dyeing cotton yarn, the pigment had a higher colour withstanding ability even when exposed to higher temperature and light.

“We plan to design a novel experimental pilot scale set up with cost effective medium to enhance the growth as well as the pigment biosynthesis potential of this bacterium,” said the director.

Apart from this, the experts plan to study the structural characterisation and eco-toxicity nature of the pigment.
