Gujarat elections 2017: Five of the seven Congress turncoats lose

Five former Congress MLAs, who had quit the party and joined BJP a few months ago, ended up on the losing side in the assembly elections.

Senior MLA Raghavji Patel, who had contested on a BJP ticket from Jamnagar Rural seat, lost to Congress candidate Vallabh Dharaviya with a margin of 6,397 votes.

Tejshree Patel, who contested from Viramgam seat in Ahmedabad district, lost to Congress’s Lakha Bharwad. While Patel got 69,630 votes, Bharwad got 76,178 votes, and sealed the win by 6,548 votes.

Amul chairman Ramsinh Parmar lost to Kanti Parmar of Congress from Thasra seat in central Gujarat by over 7,000 votes. Ramsinh Parmar secured 80,539 votes, while his rival got 87,567 votes.

Mansinh Chauhan, who had also quit Congress and joined BJP after the Rajya Sabha elections, too lost by a margin of 10,602 votes. Ajitsinh Chauhan of Congress defeated the senior leader from Balasinor seat.

Amit Chaudhary, who had contested on a BJP ticket from Mansa seat in Gandhinagar, lost to Congress’s Suresh Patel with a margin of 524 votes.

However, two of former Congress MLAs ended up on the winning side.

They include Dharmendrasinh Jadeja, who won from Jamnagar North seat with a margin of nearly 40,000 votes, and CK Raulji, who edged out Congress candidate Rajendrasinh Parmar by 258 votes.

Incidentally, Congress turncoat Karamshi Patel’s son Kanu Patel, who contested as BJP candidate from Sanand seat in Ahmedabad district, also won.

He defeated near rival and Congress candidate Pushpa Dabhi by a little over 7,700 votes.
