Gujarat government hosted the Western Region Council meeting that held in Gandhinagar on Thursday but avoided to raise any issue that would be in the interest of the people of the state. The state is at loggerheads with Maharashtra government on water sharing issue taking Par-Tapi-Narmada canal linking project and border sealing with union territories, but Gujarat did not raise the issues.
The special secretary in the interstate council, R Buhril said, "Forum of the council is very open for all the states and the states are free to raise any issue they feel necessary to discuss during the meeting. They can raise any issue related to any other state or central government. The issue of Gujarat government is concerned, we did not get any proposal from state on the issues related to water sharing with Maharashtra or other."
It was expected that Gujarat would put up this long pending issue before the council as Maharashtra government rebuffed Gujarat government's proposal to cooperate in the project that could provide drinking water in the hilly tribal region of Dangs and Valsad.
Deputy CM Nitin Patel said, "We did not raise the issue as it was not accommodated. The agenda of the interstate council meeting is pre-decided by the centre and all the states have to stick to those firmly. The issues which were discussed during this meeting are a land acquisition for the affordable housing projects and other. We will consider it later, whether the issue of water sharing with Maharashtra should be raised in next meeting of council."
"The central government proposed Gujarat government to decrease the rates of VAT from 15% to 6% on PLNG for industrial units. Their argument was that Gujarat based industries were getting PLNG at 6% VAT but we charge industries outside Gujarat 15% of VAT on the gas," Patel added.
