Patel will be the second member in the Gujarat government's cabinet who is on sick leave after the minister of state for home Pradipsinh Jadeja
Gujarat deputy chief minister Nitin Patel has taken 15 days sick leave for a knee-replacement surgery. Patel has been admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai where he will undergo the operation on Saturday. He will be discharged in four to five days but would not be able to resume office owing to post-surgery recovery.
Sources in the government said, "Patel was given several assignments by the CM including some government functions, but the deputy CM informed the government during the cabinet meeting that was held on Thursday that he would have to undergo the surgery. He has also sought leave of fifteen days from work for recovery that is prescribed to him after the surgery."
Patel would be operated on by the famous orthopedic surgeon Dr Arun Mullaji in Mumbai. The deputy CM had visited Mumbai for consultation last week where he was advised to undergo the surgery as soon as possible to avoid internal damage to knee joints.

The minister was diagnosed with oral cancer and underwent an operation on Monday at an Ahmedabad-based private hospital and he is on leave for post-surgery recuperation.
An official from the general administration department (GAD) in Gujarat government said, "Jadeja's portfolio has been taken over by the CM in his absence. The government, however, is yet to take a decision on distribution of porfolios that Patel has."
Nitin Patel has important portfolios such as finance, Narmada project, road building and health.
