The Congress party, which had won the Jasdan assembly constituency in the 2017 assembly polls, is gearing up to win the seat once again. The seat fell vacant after Kunvarji Bavaliya quit Congress and joined the BJP in July.
The dates of the by-polls are yet to be announced, but they can be announced any time now, as the elections are required to be held before January 3, i.e. within six months of the seat falling vacant.
While the BJP announced a large team for the Jasdan elections earlier this month, the Congress also began its poll preparations after the Diwali break on Monday.
A group of Congress leaders, who are among the contenders for the ticket for Jasdan seat, met Gujarat Congress president Amit Chavda at the party headquarters in Ahmedabad and assured full support to the candidate the party fields.
Congress sources said that the party had forwarded a panel of four candidates - Bhola Gohel, Avsar Nakiya, Dhiraj Shingala and Gajendra Ramani – for taking on Kunvarji Bavaliya from Jasdan.
"Whoever is selected for the ticket, the remaining contenders will extend full support him, and ensure that the party wins the prestigious seat," Gohel, who was elected from Jasdan seat on a Congress ticket in the 2012 elections, but had quit the party after cross-voting in the Rajya Sabha elections last year. However, he returned to the party fold a while later.
Officials said that the party's Gujarat in-charge Rajeev Satav is slated to visit the state on November 16 to review preparations.
