The stage for elections to Gujarat's apex body for trade and industry will be set on Friday, as the schedule for annual polls are likely to be announced.

It will set the ball rolling for nail biting contests as elections will be held for the posts of senior vice president and vice president and panels will be formed given a number of candidates are likely to enter the ring. The composition of the team will be critical as Vibrant Gujarat Summit is to be held in January 2019 and Lok Sabha elections are also scheduled by May 2019 and the role of businessmen will be critical during the year.

The dates are likely to be announced during the meeting of the Executive Committee (EC) of Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) to be held on Friday, said top GCCI sources.

According to the Constitution of GCCI, the senior vice president automatically becomes the president and nominations will be filed for the posts of senior vice president, vice president and seats that will become vacant in the EC. So, senior V-P Jaimin Vasa will become the president and vice president Jayendra Tanna has already made his intentions about contesting for the post of senior V-P clear.

Chartered accountant and businessmen Durgesh Buch is the most likely candidate to challenge Tanna. Buch is likely to be supported by formidable business clubs of Ahmedabad, while Tanna is banking on his association with trade bodies.

Candidates for the post of the vice president and members of the EC are still not clear. According to the grapevine, names that are doing the rounds include current office bearer Anil Sanghvi, Gujarat Dyestuffs Manufacturers Association president Bhupendra Patel, businessmen Bhargav Thakkar, who had lost by a whisker to Jayendra Tanna in 2017, and Gujarat Garment Manufacturers Association president Vijay Purohit, to name a few.

Entry of leaders of Rajpath Club and Karnavati Club will make the contest interesting as they hold considerable clout. Similarly, the Vatva Group's stand will also be critical in determining the composition of the new team. Previously, senior vice presidents have played critical role in determining this team.

VACANT POSTS

According to GCCI Constitution, senior V-P becomes the president by default and nominations will be filed for posts of senior V-P, V-P and seats that will become vacant in the Executive Committee.
