The Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS), on Wednesday, nabbed an accused in a fake currency case which had been lodged with the Bhavnagar police in 2016.
The accused, identified as Suraj Mahato (21), a native of Bihar, was among the main accused in the case and was responsible for transporting fake currency from Bihar to Bhavnagar and circulating it in the market. He was wanted in the case for the past two years and finally, ATS officials managed to nab him from his home state of Bihar.
As per officials, in 2016, two cases were lodged with the local police stations of Bhavnagar regarding fake currency. In the cases, the police had seized 50 notes of Rs 500 denomination and five notes of Rs 1000 denomination from two accused and later, they had arrested one more accused.
During the interrogation of the trio, Mahato's name was revealed and it was also found that he used to get the fake currency from another accused in Bihar and deliver it to Bhavnagar. Mahato used to get Rs 15,000 as commission from the accused who supplied the fake currency from Bihar.
ATS officials have taken Mahato to the Ahmedabad ATS office for further investigation. Officials said they suspect that even after demonetisation, the accused was involved in yet another fake currency racket with Rs 2000 denomination notes.
