Nearly 75 MBA and MCA colleges in the state have not got a single student after round 1 of admissions conducted by the Admissions Committee for Professional Courses (ACPC). Shockingly, 77% of the total 18070 seats have remained vacant, with hardly 25 colleges been able to fill up 100% of their seats. Out of the total of 18070 seats nearly 13985 seats have remained vacant including 5072 for MBA, 3655 for MCA and 5258 seats for MCA lateral.

For MBA, while 20 colleges have got zero students, 7 colleges have got only 1 seat filled whereas only 8 colleges have got 2 students. More than 50 MBA colleges have recorded less than 30% of seats being filled after round 1.

Experts say that round 2 will also not make a lot of difference as very few students appeared for the Common Management Aptitude Test (CMAT) this year.

"This year, the number of filled seats have witnessed a drop with nearly 600 seats as against last year. Even if after the second round, the scenario does not change much, then we keep two options open. Colleges can then consider students who have given CMAT exam but not filled the form or those who have not appeared for CMAT exam nor filled the form, on their own merits," GP Vadodaria, member secretary, ACPC said.

"These days, students are not taking CMAT exam seriously. The situation is bad after round 1 because very less number of students appear for CMAT exams. The reason is that they know that since many colleges would have vacant seats, they would admit students without a CMAT score. But they fail to understand that CMAT is needed to get admission into a good college. The situation will not improve until and unless the government makes CMAT mandatory to get admission for MBA and MCA," sources said.

Colleges which are unable to get students will eventually admit them under management quota for their survival. Good colleges are not facing issues but colleges which have mushroomed in the city in a decade face a huge challenge. But there are also students who just want a degree and do not care about their learnings", the source adds.

Among MBA colleges, those that got 100% seats filled included GLS Institute, LJ Institute of Management Studies, BK School of Management, Saurashtra University, Sardar Patel University. Somlalit institute, etc.

Whereas, colleges that recorded zero or just one filled seats included hospital management course of Auro University in Surat, Rai

University, Kalol Institute of Management, Ganpat University, Grow More Faculty of Management, etc.
