With elections likely to be announced very soon, the Gujarat government is leaving no stone unturned to woo all segments. On Tuesday, the state government announced formation of a commission for non reserved category communities that inudes 58 communities in state. Besides the commission, a Corporation for Educational and Economic Welfare of Non-reserved Communities is also formed by the government.

State home minister Pradipsinh Jadeja said that formation of the commission will benefit about 58 communities, which do not get benefits of reservation.

The commission will frame policies for welfare of the communities while the corporation will execute those policies. The commission will conduct surveys of the economic and social status of non-reserved communities and will accordingly recommend policies to the state.

The state has earmarked Rs 100 crore as the corporation's share capital, and also allocated a further Rs 500 crore to it, to be used for disbursal of loans to beneficiaries. The corporation will give loans to beneficiaries under this commission, for purposes like study, business, farming, cattle rearing and other professional activities.

"The decision to set up the corporation was taken by Chief Minister Vijay Rupani in the last cabinet meeting, which took place after the government's meeting with leaders of Patel community," said Jadeja.

The corporation will become operational soon. It will conduct surveys on economic and social status of non-reserved communities and will accordingly made policy recommendations to the state government.

Beneficiaries will get loans for purposes such as education, business, farming, cattle rearing, among others from the corporation.

The corporation will be headed by non-politicians, and will also include a member secretary, joint secretary and four other members.

Not enough, says Hardik

Despite the announcement, PAAS leader Hardik Patel said his agitation would continue. "This is not enough for the welfare of non-reserved communities. Earlier, Anandiben Patel had announced Mukhyamantri Yuva Swavlamban Yojana for upper castes which had a budget of Rs 1,100 crore in the first year. This is a lollipop by the Gujarat government. Our fight will carry on."
