Indian students might be finding it difficult to travel abroad for further education. But, for many foreigners, India is emerging as an ideal destination to complete their studies.
This new trend was clearly evident on Thursday when Gujarat Technological University (GTU) welcomed as many as 86 foreign students. They have all chosen to study full-time degree engineering, master of business administration (MBA), master of computer application (MCA) and bachelor of pharmaceutical science (BPharm) at colleges affiliated to GTU.
The students have come from countries like Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Congo, Afghanistan, Zambia, Bhutan, Nepal and Nigeria after being given scholarships by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) — founded by the ministry of external affairs.
GTU welcomed its first batch of full-time foreign students at a specially organised function held at the varsity’s Chandkheda building. Education minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama was the chief guest at the programme. “In the next two to three years, you will enjoy education here. I assure you that upon successful completion of your course, you will get a job in your country,” said Chudasama.
GTU vice chancellor Akshai Aggarwal, ICCR Gujarat chapter’s Markand Shukla and registrar GP Vadodara were also present on the occasion.
When asked about how faculties at GTU colleges would teach foreign students as they are known for their poor command over English, Aggarwal said it was up to the students to tap the best from faculties. “This is a small step towards globalisation. I am optimistic of teachers and students learning from each other,” said the VC.
