At a time when the Opposition in the state is on a massive outreach exercise with different sections of society and businessmen are fed up of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), a team of senior tax officials from Delhi are in Gujarat for feedback of trade and industry officials.

Local businessmen will compile a complete report of bottlenecks faced in implementation of GST and submit it to the central government.

The team, comprising senior officials from the Central Excise and Income Tax departments, was in Surat on Wednesday, where they met various business leaders. "They have sought details of hardships we faced after the roll out of GST. We will also suggest likely solutions to these problems.

"We will prepare a detailed report after consulting businessmen from textile, gems and jewellery industries, as well as other sectors from Surat," said PM Shah, president of the Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Some of the hardships raised during the meeting include dysfunctional systems, levying of penalty for late filing of returns and issues in getting Input Tax Credit (ITC), amongst others. "We are glad that there is a dialogue. Officers have appreciated the hardships we are facing," said Shah.

Surat was the epicentre of protest against GST. A major hub for textiles, the city was the first in the country to call for an indefinite strike as textile traders were not ready to implement GST. They withdrew the strike after assurances from the Centre. However, there is no indication that their concerns have been resolved.

The team will visit Ahmedabad on Thursday to meet local business representatives. Sources in trade and industry say that the top leadership in BJP is concerned about the dissent in the state and the way the Indian National Congress is preparing ahead of the elections to the state legislative assembly. Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi is currently on a three-day visit to Gujarat, where he met representatives of trade and industry.
