The state government will commence procurement of groundnut at Minimum Support Price (MSP) from November 15, a senior official announced on Tuesday. The development comes a few months after large-scale irregularities were found in groundnut procurement in some of the centres.

The groundnut crop in the state is estimated at 26.95 lakh tonne. The procurement would be carried out at 122 centres at APMCs across the state.

Food and civil supplies minister Jayesh Radadiya said that the Food and Civil Supplies Corporation would procure the groundnut from farmers as the nodal agency along with National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED).

"The procurement will be undertaken at Rs5,000 per quintal. The central government has declared groundnut MSP at Rs4,890 per quintal, but the state government has declared a bonus of Rs110 per quintal," Radadiya said.

The farmers would be required to register, for which online registrations would be undertaken from November 1 to 30.

The state government has also put in place several measures to prevent irregularities that took place in groundnut procurement the last time round.

"CCTV cameras will be set up at the procurement centres, and its footage will be stored. The procurement process will also be video recorded. Squads led by deputy collector level officials have been constituted for surveillance and regular checks at the procurement centres," an official release said.

According to officials, groundnut sowing has been undertaken in 14.68 lakh hectare, and the total output is estimated at 26.95 lakh tonne.

Massive irregularities were detected in groundnut procurement a few months ago as the groundnut stock was found to be mixed with large quantity of stones and mud. The Congress had alleged that the scam had links with top BJP leaders.

In a related development, the state government said that it has procured 2,619 quintal paddy, maize and bajra for over Rs46.16 lakh so far. It had begun the procurement of grains from October 17.
