GCCI polls for senior vice president, vice president on June 16

Nomination forms will be available from May 15 onwards, May 26 is the last day of filing the nomination, objections to nominations can be filed by and nominations paper scrutinised by May 29

The schedule for the high profile elections to Gujarat's apex body of trade and industry was announced on Friday, accordingly, voting will take place on June 16, while results will be announced on June 17. The schedule was announced during the meeting of the Executive Committee on Friday.

Accordingly, elections will be held for the posts of senior vice president and vice president and 23 seats of executive committee. These include corporate (3), business association — local (2), business association — outstation (1), patron/life member — local (2), patron/life member – outstation (1), regional chamber (2), general category — local (8) and general category — outstation (4).

Nomination forms will be available from May 15 onwards, May 26 is the last day of filing the nomination, objections to nominations can be filed by and nominations paper scrutinised by May 29. Nomination can be withdrawn by May 30 and the final list will be ready by the same day.

Elections will be held on June 16 and the annual general meeting will be held on the same day. Counting of votes will be held and results declared on June 17. If there are objections to polling then, the requests for repoll can be made within one hour of the declaration of results and objections against the results can be submitted by the evening of June 20.

With close to 3,600 members, GCCI is the largest and the most important body for trade and industry in the state. It has close to 203 business association and regional chambers as its members. While individuals and organisations have one vote each, associations and chambers have the weight of votes in proportion to the number of their members, while corporates have weight as per their turnover.

As per the Constitution of GCCI, the incumbent senior VP becomes the president. So Jaimin Vasa will become the new president. Incumbent vice president Jayendra Tanna has openly announced that he is in the race for the post of senior VP. Chartered Accountant and businessmen Durgesh Buch is also said to be in the fray for the post of senior VP. Leaders of prominent business clubs are also likely to be in the fray.
