As Gujarat election is turning out to be a season of backstabbing and strange bedfellows, Congress leader Salman Nizami, whose anti-India stance was used by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to rip into Congress, is ostensibly also a Rahul Gandhi-baiter even while he is rubbing shoulders with Congress' president-elect and campaigning for him in Gujarat.

Several posters appeared in Gujarat on Monday showing Rahul and Nizami together in a pic.

DNA accessed screenshots of what was Nizami's Twitter account, which was protected following the outbreak of the controversy surrounding his anti-India, pro-Kashmiri azadi posts along with such ones which were derogatory to the Prime Minister, that show his tweets ridiculing Rahul for his foreign origin, even cracking a joke showing Rahul's political understanding in poor light.

In a tweet from 2011, Nizami had raised questions about the origins of the Congress president—Rahul's elevation was announced on Monday after an election that was morally contested by some rebels such as Shehzad Poonawalla rather than any actual rival candidate in the fray.

"If Rahul Gandhi is half-Indian...," Nizami's tweet had said. He had in the same tweet gone on to also question Omar Abdullah as the latter part of the tweet had said: "...What Omar Abdullah is?"

In yet another from 2013, and rather denigrating tweet, Nizami had gone on to crack a joke on Rahul Gandhi and his mother Sonia Gandhi. In what was presented as an imaginary conversation between Rahul and Sonia, Nizami had posted: "Rahul Gandhi overheard whispering during the Republic Day parade: Mummy, if the whole army is here, who is guarding the border right now?"

While Nizami has maintained that these posts had figured after his account had been hacked, Rahul Gandhi-baiter Poonawalla told DNA that the Congress had been blinded by sycophancy so much so that it had sidelined such "nationalist" Muslims as himself and had promoted the likes of Nizami.

"Back in 2013 after I had written an article in a national daily against terrorists, several accounts had been made in my name and I was defamed through them. Again in 2015 such things happened and I had lodged a police complaint," Nizami said, but these tweets date back to 2011.

Meanwhile, Poonawlla told DNA that he had complained about these things regarding Nizami to Rahul Gandhi, but nothing was done. "He (Nizami) rather was promoted as a spokesperson of the party. While the party has been calling television channels and asking them not to call me on air, they have this person close to them. He was active in UP campaign, and now in Gujarat campaign. Is the Congress a hub of separatists?"
