Her dreams of a life ‘happily ever after’ came crashing when, after marriage, she realised that her husband was already married. He even became abusive and demanded Rs5 lakh dowry, failing which he made plans to sell her.

Based on a complaint filed by the Juhapura-based woman, Vejalpur police arrested her husband, Yousuf Shaikh, on the charges of demanding dowry and human trafficking.

Mubina (name changed) had recently completed her graduation. Her parents posted her profile on a matrimony site to find a suitable groom for her. Shaikh, who happened to see the profile, started interacting with her on phone.

During their conversations, Shaikh, a resident of Ernakulum in Kerala, claimed that he owned a readymade garment showroom in Ernakulum and wanted to marry a well-educated girl like Mubina. He even visited her place in Juhapura a few months ago and managed to create a good rapport with her parents. At that time, he allegedly claimed that he was single.

To verify his clams, Mubina and her parents went to Ernakulum, where Shaikh showed them his house and showroom. Once Mubina was convinced, they decided to get married on May 16. According to Mubina, Shaikh called them up a few weeks before the marriage date and requested her father to give Rs1 lakh, as he had incurred huge loss in his business. Believing him, Mubina’s father gave the money to Shaikh.

According to Mubina’s complaint to Vejalpur police, after marriage, when she went to Ernakulum with Shaikh she found that Shaikh had lied to her. She said that he was already married to a woman named Noorjahan and they had a child too.

When Mubina asked for explanation, Shaikh allegedly slapped her and asked her to bring Rs5 lakh from her father to expand his business. When she refused, he allegedly made plans to sell her to an Arab sheikh.

When Shaikh kept repeating his demand for Rs5 lakh, Mubina asked him to take her to her home home in Juhapura so that she could arrange the money. As soon as the couple landed in Ahmedabad on Friday, Mubina approached Vejalpur police and lodged her complaint. Cops arrested Shaikh in no time.
