The state government on Wednesday submitted the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) permission which recognises the Ambardi lion safari park in Gir sanctuary in Amreli before the Gujarat high court. The court had questioned the state as to how it had begun work on the project without getting the final approval from the competent authority.

Based on the recommendations made by a CZA-appointed technical committee recently, CZA chairperson Dr H Vardhan had signed the permission on June 19.

The government was in a hurry to obtain the approval letter after the high court questioned its validity as the work for the lion safari park had been initiated only on basis of the permission granted by the technical committee.

Post a query raised by the HC at the proceedings on June 16, the state government had sought an adjournment on the grounds that it needed to trace the required papers.

June 5, the Union ministry of forest & environment and the state government had declared that the final nod for construction of the Ambardi lion safari park near Dhari in Amreli has been given.

However, petitioner Biren Padhya challenged the validity of the permission in a PIL stating that the document giving the approval was given by the CZA-appointed technical committee, whereas the CZA is the only competent authority to issue such approval. The petitioner also objected to the safari park on the grounds that the conditions laid down by technical committee report were also not fulfilled.

The PIL has also requested a court-appointed commission to visit the spot for inspection.

The matter will now be heard on July 6.
