Want to get rid of your plastic waste? The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has offered to pick up plastic waste from doorsteps. Citizens can call the civic body helpline number, 155303, to avail the service.
The AMC has banned plastic thinner than 40 microns and for plastic items in daily use, the civic body is making sure that they are recycled. "We want to make the city free from plastic litter, " said Mukesh Kumar, municipal commissioner, AMC. "We are expecting things to get streamlined in two months. Fo plastic trash, one can call the AMC helpline number 155303. AMC's vehicle will come and collected the trash."
He said the AMC will collect plastic waste from residential and commercial units. "We have 12 dedicated plastic waste collection vans. In a few days, there will be a special category in the existing helpline number for plastic waste management," the municipal commissioner said.
Kumar said that since the blanket ban on plastic cups/glasses, bags and water pouches, the city streets have gotten free from plastic. "The nuisance-maker plastic items are not seen on the streets anymore. With the ban, the first and direct effect will be felt during the monsoon. We are expecting less water-logging as the banned plastic items clog the drains usually causing water-logging," remarked Kumar.
Vendors and shopkeepers are no longer offering plastic bags, instead they are asking customers to carry recyclables bags from home. "Our teams are inspecting vendors and retailers, they are not keeping the plastic bags," said Dr Bhavin Solanki, in-charge medical officer of health, AMC. "There are so many alternate options available. People who want to get away with their plastic trash can contact us, we will take that garbage and recycle it. In market also, plastic pouches, bags and cups are not available. For the awareness drive, we have roped in several NGOs who are meeting people and informing about plastic menace." The AMC will soon install machines at multiple points to collect plastic bottles. At present, the city has ten roads that are made from plastic waste.
