Following the footsteps of Pune Municipal Corporation, the local civic body in 2012 had decided to provide 24X7 water supply to citizens. Three wards were selected for the pilot project. However, with the present water crisis in the city, many people believe that it might be time to wind up the project.

"There is no proper policy or water management system," said Mahesh Pandya, a city-based environmentalist. "On what basis are they claiming to provide 24X7 water? People need to use water judiciously. Those who can afford will use more water, and those who can't will decrease their usage."

According to him, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has wasted more than Rs 500 crore on the project. "Where do they stand after six years of announcement? Forget about getting round-the-clock water, the BJP-run civic body has failed to provide two hours of sufficient water to citizens," said former leader of opposition Badruddin Shaikh.

He said the project was a gimmick for political gains. "No one in the city is demanding 24X7 supply of water, people just need sufficient water supply," he added.

According to civic officials, some parts of Anandnagar which fall under Jodhpur ward are getting water for seven to eight hours. "Trial is going on at Jodhpur ward and we are observing the trail. At some places, infrastructure installation is pending which is why the project delayed," said Jagdish Patel, city engineer, AMC.

According to a senior BJP member at the civic body, this project is complete failure. He said on the condition of anonymity that this project could not be viable in the future, after completion.

"There is no logic in this project. The AMC has spent crores after trial and fixing errors of the project. There are many areas which are completely parched. This should be shelved as soon as possible," he said.
