The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Monday lodged a police complaint in connection to the fake bitumen procurement scam. The scam involved submitting fake bills of Indian Oil Corporation for fictitious supply of bitumen for road works.

AMC's assistant municipal commissioner Vishal Khanama and tax official Dharmin Vyas lodged the complaint with Vastrapur police against contractor GP Chaudhary accusing him of submitting fake bitumen procurement bills with the civic body.

As per the complaint, Chaudhary allegedly submitted fake bitumen bills of Rs5.29 lakh with AMC.

The fake bills were detected by Jatin Patel, chairman of AMC's Road & Building Committee, in August. This was followed by municipal commissioner Mukesh Kumar suspending seven AMC employees in connection to the scam, and the Corporation blacklisting three contractors.

Though just one particular case of fake bills being submitted has come to light so far, it is suspected that the scam may be running into several crores.
