AMC collects 18 times more dry waste

After the trigger event by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) for source segregation of waste, the civic body has received 18 times more dry waste. The change has been witnessed by the door-to-door waste collection's total dump at the Refuse Transfer Stations (RTS) which collected around 2,000 metric tonnes of daily waste.

Earlier, there were only 7 to 8 metric tonnes of segregated dry waste received by the civic body and the remaining 2,000 metric tonnes was mixed waste which leaves more residuals after converting for compost.

"Day by day, we are getting more dry waste. At present, around 80 per cent of the waste being collected is wet waste. Before the trigger event, we were getting 7 to 8 tonnes of dry waste and remaining mixed waste. The dry waste collection has increased up to 139 metric tonnes in four days," said Mukesh Gadhvi, deputy municipal commissioner.

"From the dry waste, material has been recovered which can be recycled. We have trained around 700 women and given them safety gear to work at the RTS. Those women are churning out sellable items from waste," added Gadhvi.
