The AMC on Tuesday has launched a mega cleanliness campaign to clean Kharicut canal. As per their estimate, there is around 81,000 metric tonne of solid waste, which they will lift during the one-month long campaign.

Mayor Gautam Shah said: "During the one month's time, we will clean the canal. When we launched the canal, the locals gave us suggestions like diconnect illegal drainage connections. We will work on it as they have also given us names of some."

"They have also taken an oath to not dump garbage in the canal. On the other hand, we are going to provide them more dustbins."

The waste, which has been removed from the canal, will be left on the side of the canal. In a day or two, it will be dry and then it is going to be dumped at the Pirana dumpsite.

"The garbage has been soaking in water for years now. We can't lift it immediately as it will make the streets dirty. Once it is dry, we will lift them from the place," said Harshad Solanki, director of Solid Waste Management, AMC.

At the inaugural event, education minister Bhupendra Chudasama asked the councillors and officers to reduce the use of water and serve as per need. "I am here for half an hour and I can't consume one litre bottle during this time. Serve people as per need, this will save water."
