Markets in the city are in full bloom as Amdavadis thronged shops to buy glittering and colourful rakhis to celebrate the special bond that binds brothers and sisters.

While many are planning to celebrate the festival in a grand manner on Tuesday, there are some who would be observing Rakshabandhan on Wednesday.

Further, a couple of organisations in the city have made special arrangements to rejoice the festival on a large scale.

Brahmakumaris in the city will be celebrating the festival on Tuesday with the army to pay tribute to the jawans for protecting the country.

“Army personnel work hard to protect our country. So, why not tie rakhi on their wrists and show respect?” said BK Sarla, director of Brahmakumaris.

For the last one week, the organisation has celebrated and tied rakhis to people at central jail, police stations, schools, colleges, old-age homes and orphanages.

Similarly, the Jagannath temple will be conducting a rakhi ceremony for Jagannath, Balram and Subhadra during the day.

“Rituals and Vedic hymns will be recited and Goddess Subhadra will tie rakhi to Lord Balram and Lord Jagannath,” said Mahendra Jha, one of the trustees of the temple. This time, the temple has made rakhi using pure cotton thread.

On the other hand, Iskcon temple will mark the day by celebrating Balram Jayanti. “According to mythology, Krishna’s elder brother was born on this day. Activities like flower decoration, special abhishek, religious discourses and kirtans will be conducted to mark Balram’s birth anniversary at 12 noon,” said Yashomati Nandan Prabhu, president of Iskcon Ahmedabad. Moreover, the idol of Lord Balram would be kept in a cradle (Hindola) decorated with rakhis.

Incidentally, confusion prevailed over the right time for rakhi.

According to some astrologers, Tuesday will witness Bhadra Yoga, which is not an auspicious day and rakhi should be tied only after the yoga ends around 8.30 pm.

However, there were others, who referred to the Panchang and said that rakhi could be tied any time on Tuesday.
