How would it feel driving uninterrupted by traffic on the Parimal Garden road? What if Ahmedabad had one-way city roads just like other metro cities? Well, if all goes as per the plan of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), this could soon be reality.

To improve the traffic scenario in the city, the AMC has proposed eight one-ways on the city roads.

The proposal is yet to be sent to the traffic police for approval after which it will be implemented.

For a long time, city roads have been witnessing chaos due to haphazard traffic leading to major traffic issues; needless to mention the endless serpentine queues of vehicles lined up bumper to bumper at most traffic junction in the city. With this project, the civic body aims at reducing some of the traffic woes by identifying roads best suited for one-way traffic movement.

According to the proposal, certain roads will function as one-way during peak hours i.e. 9 am to noon and 5 pm to 8 pm, so that the capacity of the road to let traffic move increases.

The eight one-ways were identified after a detailed study of their feasibility and the evident traffic congestion on those roads. Speaking to dna, municipal commissioner, Guruprasad Mohapatra said, “We are planning to reduce traffic on the city roads. All major cities have the concept of either one-ways or restricted entry of heavy vehicles or one-ways for specific hours to reduce traffic congestion. We are working on a similar concept for roads in our city.” AMC has also proposed four roads where entry of heavy vehicles will be restricted during peak hours.

According to the proposal, the stretch from Ellisbridge to Astodia will be one-way while the stretch from Astodia Darwaja to ST stand and Jamalpur will be two-way. Similarly, other identified roads for one-ways include stretches from Sarangpur Darwaja to Kalupur; along with the road from Kalupur railway station to Sarangpur Darwaja. The patch from Sarangpur Darwaja to Revadi Bazaar will be two-way. In Vastrapur, the main road stretching from Sanjivani hospital till Alpha One mall extending up to Kalyan Pushti haveli will be one-way.

Similar one-ways have been proposed for stretches like Parimal Garden to CN Vidyalaya, Mithakali six roads, Revadi Bazaar to Lal Darwaja, Thakkarbapanagar BRTS road and SV Desai road in Navrangpura.

Moreover, restriction of heavy vehicles during the day has been proposed for roads like Naroda BRTS route, Meghaninagar, Chandlodia and Behrampura.
