The Ahmedabad Metro train now has come on track as the trial run of the project began on Thursday.

The Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) conducted this trial run on 900 meters long track near Apparel Park Depot in Khokhra area of Ahmedabad.

The managing director of GMRC IP Gautam said, "Technical examination of the first trainset was successfully conducted on the test track at Apparel park. We are preparing for some inspections so that the commercial run of the projects starts in early March."

"The second trainset is expected to arrive on February 9 and statutory inspection by Research, Design and Standards Organisation of the Indian Railways will also complete soon. All the technical examination of the first trainset remained satisfactory so far, and Ahmedabad is set to get its metro rail running on track very soon," Gautam added.

Initially, the service for metro rail will be available in the East-West corridor during the commercial run. This will be on the 20.536km long stretch connecting Vastral Gam to Thaltej Gam. The first commercial run will be in priority reach areas — from Vastral to Apparel Park. The route connects six stations namely Vastral Gam, Nirant Cross Roads, Vastral, Rabari Colony, Amraiwadi and Apparel Park.

While another stretch of the project —the North-South corridor that connects Motera to APMC Market would start later in next six to eight months, sources from Gujarat government added.

A very senior official in Gujarat government informed, "The commercial run of Metro will begin with the inaugural ceremony performed by the PM Narendra Modi in Ahmedabad. The government will soon call a meeting to decide the ticket fares of the Metro rail."

"The government's aim would be to divert Ahmedabadis towards mass transportation in large number and not to earn profit out of this project. Initially, the fares will be fixed very low to attract more commuters to metro rail for daily transportation," the official added.

The total expenditure estimated after the project is Rs. 10,773 crore. Government of India and Government of Gujarat have the equity of Rs. 1990 crore each. The Japan International Cooperation Agency has awarded a loan of Rs 6,067 crore for this project.
