City has 100% coverage of garbage collection in all wards

It was a moment of immense pride for Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) when president Ram Nath Kovind conferred 'Cleanest Big City' award to Ahmedabad on Wednesday. Mayor Bijal Patel shared the news on social media and congratulated citizens for getting this honour.

Sharing his happiness Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Patel wrote, 'In the category of the population more than 10 lakh, Ahmedabad ranks first as 'Clean Big City'.

The award was part of Swachh Survekshan 2019 (SS2019) ranking, in which Ahmedabad received sixth position across the country. From 5000 points, Ahmedabad received 4137.43 points. This was divided in four categories like self level progress, certification, direct observation and citizen feedback.

The ministry said that the city has achieved appreciable growth under Service Level Progress; the city has 100 per cent coverage of door-to-door garbage collection in all wards. All notified commercial areas under its jurisdiction are swept and cleaned twice a day as well as on all Sundays and festive holidays with mandatory night sweeping.

Hundred per cent of the waste generated in AMC is segregated into wet and dry categories at the source and 100 per cent of the Bulk Garbage Generators (BGGs) have the facility for on-site composting of the waste generated by them. Alongside, 100 per cent of the city's wet and dry waste is being processed in a scientific manner, stated the ministry.

Citizen feedback

A great number of citizens of AMC have provided their valuable feedback in SS2019. More than 99 per cent were aware that TMC was participating in SS2019. And approximately the same percentage of the citizens were also of the opinion that cleanliness standards have increased in the area. Around 90 per cent of citizens said that now bins are easily visible in commercial and public areas. 97 per cent of citizens said they are asked to give segregated dry and wet waste to the waste collector.

ODF++ status

Apart from all the above achievements, the city also succeeded in getting Open Defecation Free (ODF) certification under Open Defecation Free protocol. Alongside, the city also received three-star rating under Garbage Free City protocol.
