Metro Link Express for Gandhinagar Ahmedabad (MEGA), that is laying metro rail lines in the city, has set yet another example of good urban planning and management. After they found a drainage canal below the tracks on one of the metro route, the agency is planning to shift it without digging the surface.
"We are trying to build a canal below 4 meters and divert the existing drain canal with a jack push machine. The canal will be 1.5-km-long. We have already started the work and the canal will meet at the Sabarmati river's existing outlet near Shankar Bhuvan," said IP Gautam, Managing director, MEGA (Metro Link Express for Gandhinagar Ahmedabad).
"The jack push machine, which is ordered for constructing the drain canal, will work four meters below the surface without hampering the surface traffic or damaging the existing roads. After construction of the canal, we will divert the drain line of Delhi Darwaja to Sabarmati," MD further said.
By December 2019, work on East-West corridor Phase 1 is likely to finish. The trial run between six stations will take place in January 2019, between six stations namely Vastral gam, Vastral, Nirant Crossroads, Rabari Colony, Amraiwadi and Apparel park.
Phase 1 has two corridors – North-South (from APMC market to Motera stadium) and East-West (Thaltej gam to Vastral Gam) roughly 32 km long network.
