Ahmedabad: Clashes break out in Daskroi, 100 booked for rioting

Clashes broke out between two groups from Rabari and Thakore communities in Vaanch village in Daskroi (rural Ahmedabad) on Tuesday afternoon over a personal matter.

Trouble began when five people had gone to get a punctured tyre mended at a garage and a verbal spat broke out over the payment. It later escalated into a physical scuffle. Eyewitnesses have told the police that it started with the payment issue but later escalated. There had been an issue in the past because of which tensions were high between the two communities in the village.

"A few months back, there was another such scuffle at a larger scale between the two communities and since then, tensions have been high. Even this fight became about that issue though it had started out as a personal dispute," Rajendra Asari, SP Ahmedabad Rural told DNA.

The police had to resort to using tear gas shells to bring the situation under control as well. An FIR has been registered for rioting and more than 100 unidentified people have been named as accused of instigating the rioting. The police also said that at least five people had suffered minor injuries and five vehicles were vandalised after the clashes broke out.

"We are looking into the matter and getting the situation under control. We have also appealed to the local community leaders to keep their followers in check. More police personnel have also been deployed for preventive measures. We are also looking at the CCTV cameras to point out exactly who were the nuisance creators who later also instigated others to escalate the clashes," Asari further added.
