Ahmedabad police commissioner, on November 13, had issued a notice to the occupants of 27 housing units at Shahibaug police quarters, asking them to vacate their residential flats within seven days. Three hundred and twenty-four families have been affected by the order.

The Gujarat government had earlier granted Rs 15 crore to Ahmedabad police for redeveloping the existing old houses and constructing new residential buildings and offices in five years. Around 6,000 housing units of the city police will be redeveloped and 1,500 units will be repaired within this period.

“How can these 324 families find a residence in just seven days? The department should have thought of giving accommodation before issuing the notice. It would have been fine if they made an alternate arrangement before issuing the notice,” Shyamsingh Thakur, a city-based social worker, said.

“An alternate accommodation is only our secondary concern. Currently, we’re only thinking about the safety of these people. These buildings were dangerous by the structural engineers who surveyed the site.”

“We have issued a notice to the families and the DG office has given an instruction that unsafe places at the site must be vacated. We understand the humanitarian angle. We have given them seven days to vacate,” Vipul Agrawal, Additional Commissioner of Police, said.

“The city’s police department is going to give them an alternate accommodation. The families will be shifted to the PWD house and to other vacant police housings. That apart, the government is paying rent allowance to its staff,” Agrawal said.
