The Gujarat government plans to start off aerosports at the hometowns of the CM and deputy CM soon. The state government-run Gujarat State Aviation Infrastructure Company Limited (GUJSAIL) has floated a tender for the appointment of an agency for the undertaking of aerosports activities at Rajkot and Mehsana.

Sources in the government said that following a great response to the air show at Mehsana, authorities have decided to organise aerosports at the air strip there. "The state government wished to develop aero sports activities at Deesa and the process was underway. But the air strip available there was handed over to the Air Force and the project had to be dropped. However, after great response to the air show in Mehsana, we have decided that the place is ideal for aerosports too as the strip there is available."

"Rajkot is also one destination with the potential to attract lots of tourists as those who come to visit the Gir Asiatic Lion Sanctuary, will have another destination to stay at and also participate in exciting activities like aerosports. The city has good air, rail and road connectivity, and is therefore, an ideal place to develop facilities for aerosports," added the sources.

Activities such as light aircraft flying, aerobatics, aero-modelling, ballooning, gliding, hang gliding, paragliding, parachuting, sky diving and power kites are being planned for the development of aerosports hubs at Rajkot and Mehsana.

In Gujarat, aerosports facilities are already available at Saputara, Mandvi and Pavagadh. The Gujarat government had allocated grants to the tune of Rs 1 crore in the budget plan for 2012-13 towards Viability Gap Funding (VGF) for onshore and offshore connectivity related to aerosports development in the state. The government has also developed an aerosports facility at Junagadh and made an attempt to develop one more such facility near Amreli town in Saurashtra region by allotting Rs 10 crore for its development in the 2016-17 annual budget.
