Anaemia has seeped into the lives of Amdavadi kids. According to a recent health survey conducted jointly by the AMC-run schools, 14% kids who are studying in the Anganwadis are suffering from Anaemia.

The study was conducted on 1,97,232 kids studying in Anganwadis under the civic body limits.  Out of these, 25% kids have poor health, the report said.

The survey which was conducted between December 2017 and March 2018 says 28,504 kids are suffering from anaemia and are regularly given iron tablets.

“The kids who are enrolled in the Anganwadi are coming from poor families. The kids hardly get any nutritious food. We are providing them with supplementary foods and iron tablets. Malnourishment is the main reason for anaemia in women and kids,” said Kinnari Mehta, family welfare officer of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation.

Bhavin Solanki, in-charge medical officer of health, said that even after years of through awareness programmes about importance of vitamins, the anaemic levels have comparatively decreased among kids. In 2016-17, AMC screened 1,84,306 kids of Anganwadi out of which 17% were anaemic.

“The level of anaemia is now decreasing over the years as they are directly under our observation. Moreover, we are also referring kids to civil hospitals and UN Mehta Hospital,” said Solanki.

The civic body has referred 51 kids with renal issues to civil hospital, Asarva and 96 kids suffering from hearing problems to UN Mehta Hospital. In 2016-17, AMC reported Anganwadi 330 kids with heart problems and 200 kids with renal problems.

“Government is giving the kids supplementary food. But it is not enough. Eating leafy vegetables or fruits is costlier than a lucrative packet of chips. The kids are playing in the open and not washing their hands. This causes infection in them,” said Shalmi Mehta, a city-based paediatrician.
