Hailing women as creative by nature, Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry Business Women Wing (GCCIBWW) conferred ‘Swayam Siddha-2013’ award on 13 outstanding women entrepreneurs of the state on Wednesday.

The awards were given in six different categories—manufacturing, trading and services, rural, special achievement, life-time achievement and youth icon. The chamber had received a total of 38 applications.

Praising the efforts put in by businesswomen, renowned writer and columnist Esther David said that creativity was like second nature to women and they needed to enhance their creativity in all fields of life. Executive vice-chairperson of National Innovation Foundation Anil Gupta echoed similar views and cited various anecdotes for supporting the argument that women and creativity go hand in hand.

He gave the example of Gangaben, a resident of Mansa in Mehsana district, who had written a book called ‘Hunnar Mahasagar’ in 1858. She had highlighted 2080 different skills of women in her book.

Besides encouraging the women entrepreneurs, both Gupta and David advised them on how they could take their career forward.

David talked about importance of time management, while Gupta asked them to work towards a common goal, along with their own.

He also requested state minister for energy and petrochemicals Saurabh Patel, chief guest at the event, to float a venture capital for young women entrepreneurs. Patel too praised the work done by GCCI’s businesswomen wing and women entrepreneurs of the state.   He said, “The government is planning to float a scheme for hand-holding of small entrepreneurs. The scheme has low risk factor and it generates many job opportunities. Moreover, we don’t need much help from outside for this scheme.”

Air marshal Daljeet Singh was guest of honour at the function. GCCIBWW had especially invited him to express their appreciation for the rescue work carried out by armed forces during the recent devastation in Uttarakhand.
