Summer science programmes big hit among Bangalore youth

Students and young researchers from all over the country are flocking to scientific institutions in the city to get hands on experience in various sciences, astronomy and astrophysics activities.

The summer science programmes offered by the city-based scientific institutions has witnessed an overwhelming response with almost all the programmes being filled up by undergraduate and postgraduate level students from colleges and universities across the country.The Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), which offers two courses- School in Physics and Astrophysics and Summer Project Programme, has enrolled 36 students.

The 20 students selected for the School in Physics and Astrophysics will undergo training at the IIA campus in Kodaikanal and those selected for the Summer Project Programme will get a fellowship of Rs10,000 per month. The multi-disciplinary research institute Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), which is offering summer research fellowship programme for two months to undergraduate and MSc students, will have 73 students this year.

The JNCASR summer research fellowship programme is offered in various disciplines like life sciences, mathematics, material science, physical science, chemical science and engineering. The JNCASR Summer Research Fellowship Programme, since its inception in the 1990, has been beneficial to over 1,700 students. The Indian Academy of Sciences, which offers Summer Research Fellowship Programme for students and teachers, has also seen an overwhelming response.

Students and teachers from all over the country have enrolled for the fellowship offered in disciplines like chemistry, earth and planetary sciences, engineering, computer sciences, life sciences, mathematics and physics. The selected students and teachers will undergo training under reputed guides from institutions like the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and JNCASR among others.
