Soft skills programme prepares students for Telecom industry

The newly launched course aims to address and bridge the gaps in the telecom industry. Patricia Mascarenhas reports

The Indian telecom sector is expected to soon become the second largest telecom market in the world. As per a Microsoft report, out of 4.7 billion global internet users in 2025, 700 million will be from India. With so many new users and newer technologies like 3G and WIMAX entering the market, the telecom sector has thrown up a number of opportunities to all potential candidates. Despite being one of the largest employers in the last decade, the sector will still need around 2, 75,000 people this year. The challenge here is to find the right talent. 

Therefore, in order to address and facilitate the issue of providing skilled professionals to the industry, Rajasthan Institute of Engineering & Technology (RIET) in collaboration with the Telecom Sector Skill Council (TSSC) has introduced a soft skill programme to fill the gap of in the telecom industry and ensure a better future to potential candidates. 

The course will include effective communication skills like public speaking, presentations, negotiating, conflict resolutions, knowledge-sharing; writing skills for preparing reports, proposals, instruction manuals, memos, notices, official correspondence etc. “It will be a combination of verbal and non-verbal skills with necessary technical training required for the telecommunication industry,” says Rajendra Singh Tomar, chairman and governing body, RIET, Jaipur.

The purpose of this training is to provide a practical approach and certification to anyone who wants to build a successful career in telecom industry. “The main aim of this collaboration is to focus on the future needs of the economy by balancing the relationship between academia and industry, “says Tomar adding that this course will provide theoretical as well as practical knowledge about different aspects of the telecom industry. “The certification will enable them to face all kinds of challenges in the future and create ample job opportunities for aspirants from Rajasthan as well as from other parts of the country,” he informs.  

Apart from this, TSSC will also provide the necessary support to the programme through guest lectures and arranging mid-term as well as extended internship projects for students to gain experience on real-time data and research papers. “Both RIET and TSSC will jointly identify job roles for training and placement. A Center of Excellence will be set up to identify job roles, validate occupational standards, training and assessment framework and pilots conducted by them,” adds Tomar.  

In view of the growing number of aspirants for higher education, this is a great opportunity for potential aspirants across the country to fast track their careers in an industry with tremendous growth potential. “Soft skills allow us to use our technical skills and knowledge effectively. It helps improve the way we interact with our bosses, co-workers and customers. This programme allows us to get our work done on time keeping all these things in mind and thus succeed in this competitive world,” says Karan Garg, a student of the course.    

Akash Sharna, another students of the programme agrees, “In today’s job market, employers from all organisations seek candidates with professional traits like teamwork, dependability, adaptability, problem solving and communication skills. The curriculum of this programme will help me develop leadership skills and thus improve teamwork, creativity, efficiency and productivity.”
