A study of the financial markets sector reveals that by 2022, India will be requiring more than 47 lakh qualified financial market professionals in different capacities. To help students make the most of this opportunity, the Apeejay Stya University (ASU) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Stock Exchange (NSE). "Realising the fact that there is a lack of quality man power in the financial sector, we had envisaged to introduce programmes which would provide the right blend of academic rigour and employable skills," says Nishant Berlia, Board of Management, executive council, ASU.

This is the first time the NSE has collaborated with a private university. Rana Usman, senior assistant vice president, NSE says, "We have been conducting various programmes for financial market job aspirants, however, this time we wanted to associate with an academic institution and hone young talent on campus through our programmes."

Under the MoU four new programmes are being offered at the udergraduate and post graduate level (see box). Students opting for undergraduate programmes are required to complete 10 modules of the National Stock Exchange Certificate for Financial Market (NCFM) and those pursuing post graduate courses will have to complete 22 modules. The NCFM course module includes subjects like cash market, derivatives, options trading strategies, mutual funds, insurance, currency segment, risk management and surveillance.

While the ASU will offer the necessary infrastructure and faculty members, NSE will provide the course material. Experts from NSE will train the faculty of ASU who will then execute the modules in class. Guest lectures by finance experts will also be conducted. Internships with reputed finance institution and research projects form the core of these new programmes. Certification will be provided at two stages—NSE will certify students after completing the NCFM modules and ASU will do so post completion of the course.

Berlia informs that these specially designed programmes ensure employment in both banking and non-banking financial sectors like banks, asset management companies, insurance companies, investment houses and consulting organisations. "Besides these, graduates can also opt for self-employment avenues like independent investment consultants and independent investors," he signs off.
