‘ICSI is playing a leading role in popularising brand CS across globe’

In Pune for a press conference, president of Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI), Nesar Ahmed talks with Rajesh Rao on the new initiatives of the body towards brand building and the challenges ahead.

Tell us about the extensive research that ICSI has carried out recently on various aspects of corporate governance.
The institute is actively engaged in the research activities in the areas of interest to corporate sector and required for company secretaries. The ICSI also undertakes research on behalf of the government and regulatory authorities.  Being a pioneer in promoting good corporate governance, the institute has recently brought out research studies on various aspects of corporate governance based on the 2008-2011 data provided by companies participating in the ICSI national award for corporate governance.

In terms of globalisation of company secretary profession, are we at par with global practice? Where do we need to strengthen ourselves?
The institute is playing a leading role in popularising the brand ‘CS’ throughout the world. As a result, the Corporate Secretaries International Association (CSIA) has been established in Geneva.

Currently, the president of the ICSI is the president of CSIA. The CSIA has brought out 20 principles on corporate governance and working towards corporate secretaries’ toolkit.

The institute is in a transformational stage. Expectation of the trade and industries from our professionals has grown leaps and bounds. To face the challenges to provide real-time value added services to our stakeholders, we are embarking on a major technology transformation to provide real-time e-mode solutions.

Is there a dearth of CS in India? What are the new avenues open for them?
The ICSI has on its rolls about 32,000 members. Seeing the potential of Indian economy, there is a great scope for company secretaries. A company secretary is a key managerial professional and plays a vital role in ensuring compliances with various corporate laws and in ensuring good corporate governance practices.  The Companies Bill, 2011, proposes expanded role for company secretaries. There is also a lot of scope for company secretaries in the areas of banking, insurance, valuation, direct and indirect taxes including service tax and  value added tax, etc.

What are the sources available for those aspiring to do company secretary programme?
The ICSI offers company secretaryship course through its regional councils and chapters only. There is no institution affiliated to the ICSI for offering company secretaryship course in the country or elsewhere.
