The lukewarm response to the Bachelor of Education (BEd) course in Gujarat University (GU) has reinforced the view that the humble profession of teaching has lost its charm among youngsters in the state. Just like previous years, a large number of BEd seats are likely to go vacant this academic session, too.

As per GU’s figures, only 8,500 students have applied for admission in BEd in 92 GU-affiliated colleges. The total number of seats is 9,200.

The university was expecting a good response after 10,854 students purchased the admission forms. But to their dismay, only 8,500 students returned the forms.

Head of the education department at GU, RS Patel, said the situation is same when compared to last three years. Last year, around 3,000 seats had remained vacant and the scenario is likely to be same in the current academic session.

Explaining the reasons, he said that of the 8,500 aspirants only those students who get admission in granted BEd colleges will confirm admission. Those who do not wish to pay high fee in Self Finance Institute will not continue the admission procedure.

He further explained that BEd is chosen by those students who fail to get admission in other courses. He pointed out that only 10% of these students are genuinely interested in becoming a teacher.

“Teachers are not paid well. When there is no decent job opportunity, the course is not going to attract many. Those who get a job are paid meager salary,” he added.
