Drop out rates in Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have reduced by half in the last one year, with IIT Bombay showing the most progress from 109 drop outs in the year 2014-15 to just 34 in the academic year 2015-16.

While in the academic year 2014-15 – 1126 students dropped out from various IITs, in the year 2015-16 the number stood at 656 students, information provided by Ministry of Human Resource Development reveals.

Apart from IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi has also registered a considerable progress in dropout declines. From 443, the dropouts have come to 256 in one year. The institutions are giving credit to the various stress management and student mentorship programmes for decline in dropouts.

Drop outs in IITs had been a major concern for both government and IITs and had been a matter of discussion in all IIT council meetings. Many students left the institution midway as they were unable to cope up with the stress.

IIT Delhi Professor V Ramgopal Rao puts it as "Now we do not just admit students, we make sure that they are feeling comfortable in the institution. We have made the counselling system very strong. If a student feels troubled by something in the institution, he/she can take help of the counselling centres."

He further adds: "Earlier a large number of students also left the course mid-way because of difficulties in the medium of instruction. To tackle this issue, IIT Delhi now has a Hindi cell, students who come from Hindi medium facing trouble in the medium of instruction can contact the Hindi cell if they have a problem in understanding the lecture."

IIT Bombay also attributes the drop out declines to better connect with students and counselling. The institute however also adds that most of the drop-outs are among postgraduate students who leave mid-way if they get a job opportunity.

"Drop out rate among undergraduate students is very low in our institution, it is almost zero now. The ones who drop out midway are post graduate or PhD students who get either a research opportunity abroad or a job. When it comes to BTech students, we have tried to contain the dropout as much as possible by various student mentorship and stress management programmes," said IIT Bombay Director Devang Khakhar.

Raising concerns about PG students leaving midway IIT Delhi Director Professor Rao adds: "Students who pursue PG in IITs take up jobs in PSUs and leave the course mid-way. The government has already conveyed this to PSUs that if they hire from IITs, they should let students finish their course."

Drop outs in Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) has also declined in the last one year. In the academic session 2014-15 – 55 students had dropped out mid-way, the number this year has reduced to 49.

There are 23 IITs in the country currently, with 16 old institutions and seven new ones. Similarly, with 13 old and six new, the number of IIMs in India stands at 19.
