A dip in cut-offs for professional courses

Admission to a professional degree course like Bachelor of Mass Media (BMM) or Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS) in top colleges across the city will continue to be out of reach for students from the open category who have not scored at least 80 per cent in their standard XII examinations.

Most colleges in the city saw a marginal dip in cut-offs for self-financing courses. The bigger problem is that a third merit list for these professional courses might be unlikely.

“Most students who have secured admission in the first list have taken admission and so a third list for most courses is unlikely,” said Dr TA Shiware, principal, Hinduja College.

The second merit list for admission to first year undergraduate courses was put up on Thursday evening and the cut-offs for professional courses saw a dip by 0.5 to 3%.

However, in Jai Hind College there were no seats available in BMM for students from the Arts stream in the second list. The first list cut-off was 91.60 per cent for Arts students.

For BMS, only two students made it to the second list which had a cut-off at 95.20%.

According to Dr Harsha Mehta, principal, SIES college, Sion the second list is an indicator of actual cut-offs because students tend to apply to multiple colleges in the first round. While cut-offs for professional courses remained high, conventional BA or BSc cut-offs came down drastically in a few colleges. At SIES College, admission to first year BA is now open for all. On the contrary, the second merit list for BCom at HR College closed at 90 per cent

The cut-offs for BSc (IT) were down by approximately 5 to 15 marks. At SIES College, the cut-off was down to 82 out of 100 marks in mathematics as compared to the 87 for the first list. The situation was similar at KC College where the cut-off went from 80 to 64 in the second merit list.

At Hinduja College no seats were available in BCom. Students can secure admission and pay fees on June 14 and June 15 up to 1.30 pm.

The third merit list will be declared on June 15, at 6pm.
